Who wrote the Mahabharata? Rishi Vyas or Lord Ganesha?

This story tells us who wrote the Mahabharata Epic, who composed it and what role did Lord Brahma play in getting the epic poem written down. Ugrasrava Sauti who met Kulapati Rishi’s and narrated the creationism theory on how our world came into existence.

Continuing with the story, he starts to narrate how Rishi Vyas who had successfully composed this historic poem was worried regarding how to get this history well documented. So that his disciples and future generations can read it.

Lord Brahma became aware of his worries and came to visit him to offer a solution. After the initial greetings and offerings shared by Rishi Vyasa, Lord Brahma suggested Lord Ganesha’s name as someone who is equipped to handle the complexities of writing such an epic. After suggesting the name Lord Brahma left for his abode.

As soon as Lord Brahma left, Rishi Vyasa started meditating and requesting Lord Ganesha to appear and help him. In the end, pleased with the request Lord Ganesha met Rishi Vyasa. Rishi Vyasa explained the challenges that he was facing and through it request Lord Ganesha to write his epic poem.

Lord Ganesha agreed to writing it, however he has one condition wherein he requested that his pen does not stop even for a moment when he begins writing. Rishi Vyasa agreed but also put forth his condition that if Lord Ganesha doesn’t understand anything he will have to understand the meaning first and then write it down.

Eventually both agreed and that’s how we know that even though Rishi Vyasa composed the Mahabharata Epic, it was written down by Lord Ganesha first.

Now you must be wondering why the two conditions. Mahabharata Epic is basically history (itihasa), if someone narrates but pauses in between then they have the opportunity to twist the story according to their narrative. Rishi Vyasa placed the condition because he at least needed to breath and recollect what had happened. So he would use the pauses for meaning check for approval those.
