The Origins: From Darkness to the Primal Egg
In the beginning, Ugrasrava tells us, there was nothing but darkness—a vast and formless void. From this cosmic emptiness, a primal egg appeared, a seed that would give birth to all life. Known as Mahadivya or Hiranyagarbha (the golden cosmic womb), this egg was the foundation of all creation, marking the start of the Yuga, or cosmic age.
From this divine egg, Pitamah Brahma, the creator of the universe, emerged. Alongside Brahma, Suraguru (the teacher of the gods) and Sthanu (the eternal being) also took form, marking the beginning of divine existence.
The Lineage of Creation
Ugrasrava’s recounting continues with the creation of the 21 Prajapatis, progenitors who furthered the spread of life. These were followed by the 10 Prachetas, Daksha, and his seven sons. Together, they laid the foundations of existence as we know it.Next came an extraordinary figure recognized by all, leading to the emergence of many divine and semi-divine beings. Among them were the Viswe-devas (guardians of all beings), the Adityas (solar deities), the Vasus (personifications of natural elements), and the Aswins, the twin healers of the gods. Alongside them appeared the Yakshas, Sadhyas, Pisachas, Guhyakas, and the Pitris, the ancestral spirits.
The Cosmos Takes Shape
As the creation story unfolded, Ugrasrava described how the Brahmarishis (celestial sages) and Rajarishis (royal sages) came into existence, representing wisdom and governance. These sages witnessed the formation of the universe’s physical elements—water, heavens, earth, air, and sky.Following these cosmic forces, time itself was born. Years, seasons, months, day, and night began to cycle, ensuring that the universe maintained its sacred balance.
The Celestial Hosts
One of the most captivating parts of this creation story in Hinduism is the mention of the thirty-three thousand, thirty-three hundred, and thirty-three devas—celestial beings responsible for the governance and protection of the universe. These divine hosts, alongside the great dynasties mentioned by Ugrasrava, established the spiritual order that would guide human civilization.
